Waytous with CASIC Aerospace Heavy Industry · autonomous mining truck
Driverless MT4400 220-tonne haul trucks
Baorixile mine
Waytous, a spin-out of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Automation, supplied the driverless software and Aerospace Heavy Industry rebuilt the steering, braking, drive, dump and lighting controls of 220-tonne MT4400 electric-drive mine trucks, adding sensors, positioning and 5G links. The trucks work in a five-truck platoon alongside an electric shovel and support vehicles, watched by a safety officer.

Why it matters
Billed by the project partners as the world's first platoon of large driverless haul trucks working in extreme cold (down to minus 50 C) and China's first five-truck driverless haulage over a 5G network.
Real-world use
Five 220-tonne MT4400 electric-drive trucks were converted from May 2020 at China Energy's Baorixile open-pit coal mine in Inner Mongolia and were hauling day and night by January 2021 (China Securities Journal, Feb 2021); Waytous said it had delivered more than 200 driverless vehicles by January 2022 (PEdaily, Jan 2022).
